The princess cut refers to diamonds that are generally square or rectangular in shape and like a pyramid. They have bevelled edges with sharp, pointed corners and contain up to 76 facets. The straight, angular lines of the princess cut diamond keep it looking modern, and is a very popular choice, still to this day.

The ideal princess cut has a length-to-width ratio not exceeding 1.05:1 to appear square. A ratio any bigger will make the princess cut more rectangular. For a rectangular princess cut diamond, it should be a ratio of 1.07 - 1.15:1. The more rectangular in shape, the lower the price of the princess cut.

Princess cut diamonds are square modified brilliants, compared to the asscher cut diamond which features a step cut facet arrangement. The asscher cut diamond features cropped corners, parallel facets and less depth than the princess cut. They generally have the same number of facets, but if you’re looking for more brilliance and sparkle, a princess cut is the better option.
